Overview
A Template is a Report saved in a reusable form at the time of Report design. When a Designer saves a Report, they choose whether it becomes a Dashboard-bound Report or a Template; the Template path preserves the Report’s layout and design as a starting point that other Designers can apply when building their own Reports. The applied Template carries the saved layout forward; the new Report draws data from the new user’s selected data context.
Library Templates is the management surface for Templates. It is accessed from Lens → Library → Templates and contains three tabs that scope the visible Templates by ownership and audience: My Templates, Shared Templates, and System Templates. Templates are created from the Report Designer at save time, not from Library; Library is the catalog and management surface only.
When to use it
- Locate a Template you saved to share or remove.
- Open a Template another Designer has shared with you, to use as a starting point for a new Report.
- Browse the System Templates available environment-wide for common Report layouts.
- Publish a finished Template so it can be shared with specific users.

Template creation
Templates are not created from Library Templates itself. They are produced at Report save time from the Report Designer.
| Design or open the Report | The Report’s layout, visualizations, and design settings are configured in the Report Designer. |
| Save the Report | The save action presents options for how to save it. The Designer chooses between a Dashboard-bound Report and a Template. |
| Select Template | Saves as a regular Template into the Designer’s My Templates tab. |
Key behaviors
Templates are layout-and-design only. A Template preserves how a Report looked when its Designer saved it — layout, visualizations, design configuration. When another Designer applies the Template, the layout carries over, but data is drawn from their own selected data context. A Template is therefore a reusable shell, not a snapshot of data.
Templates are created from the Report Designer, not from Library. A Report is saved as a Template by selecting the Template option at save time. Library Templates is the catalog and management surface — there is no Template authoring action that originates from Library.
System Template scope is the environment. A System Template is visible to every user in the environment where it was created.Template vs. Dashboard at save time. Choosing Template at save time routes the Report into Library Templates rather than the Dashboard. A Report saved as a Template does not appear on the Dashboard view. The two save targets are mutually exclusive.
