Filters and Parameters
Overview
Filters and parameters help you control how data is displayed in your dashboard. They allow you to narrow down results, adjust views dynamically, and focus on the most relevant insights without modifying the underlying data.
Filters
Filters are used to limit the data shown in your dashboard based on selected conditions.
What you can do:
- Restrict data by specific values (e.g., region, product, or category)
- Apply multiple filters simultaneously
- Update visualizations instantly based on selection
Examples:
- Show sales data only for 2025
- View performance for a specific region or department
- Filter customers based on segment or status
👉 Filters directly affect the dataset being visualized.
Parameters
Parameters allow you to control how data is presented, rather than filtering the data itself.
What you can do:
- Switch between different metrics or views
- Adjust calculation logic dynamically
- Customize display formats
Examples:
- Toggle between Revenue and Profit
- Change time aggregation (Daily / Monthly / Yearly)
- Select comparison mode (Year-over-Year / Month-over-Month)
👉 Parameters influence the behavior and presentation of your dashboard.
Key Difference
| Filters | Parameters |
|---|---|
| Limit the data | Control how data is displayed |
| Reduce dataset | Modify calculations or views |
| Example: Region = India | Example: View = Monthly |
Best Practices
- Use filters for data selection
- Use parameters for flexibility and customization
- Avoid too many filters to keep dashboards simple
- Combine both for powerful, interactive dashboards
