How to delete a group

Remove a group from the workspace. Members lose the roles the group was granting, and anything nested beneath it is affected too. Check the branch before you delete.

Before you begin

You need the Account Admin role and the name of the group.

Check for subgroups first. Deleting a parent cascade-deletes its subgroups.

Deleting a group removes only the access it was granting. The users themselves aren’t touched, and neither is anything they created. Members keep everything they hold directly or through another group.

Steps

Step 1. Check what’s beneath it

Search for the group and look for subgroups nested under it. If there are any, handle them first, reparent them under a different group or delete them individually.

Step 2. Check who’s in it

Open the group and note its members and roles. Anyone in it loses that access unless another source provides it.

Step 3. Reassign anyone who still needs the access

Give them a direct role assignment or add them to another group before you delete. Doing it in this order means no gap in access.

Step 4. Open Group Management

From the main navigation, click Admin, then open the Group Management tab.

Step 5. Delete

Click the delete icon in the group’s row, then click Ok at the warning prompt. A success message confirms the deletion.

Result

The group is gone. Its members no longer hold the roles it granted, unless they hold the same roles directly or through another group.

The users themselves remain, along with everything they’ve created. Only the grouping and its role grants are removed.

Common issues

  1. Members lost more than expected. The group was granting roles you hadn’t accounted for, or they were also inheriting from a parent that’s now out of the picture.
  2. Members lost nothing. They hold the same roles elsewhere. That’s normal, and it means the group was redundant.
  3. I deleted the wrong group. It can’t be recovered. Recreate it with the same name, members, roles, and parent. Access comes back; history doesn’t.
