How to edit a group
Change a group’s name, members, roles, or parent. Membership changes affect one person; role and parent changes affect everyone in the group and every subgroup beneath it.
Before you begin
You need the Account Admin role and the name of the group.
Know which kind of change you’re making, because the reach is very different:
- Adding or removing a member affects that one person
- Adding or removing a role affects every member, and every member of every subgroup below
- Changing the parent rewrites what the whole branch inherits
The last two are the ones to slow down on. Check what sits beneath a group before touching its roles or its parent.
Steps
Step 1. Open Group Management
From the main navigation, click Admin, then open the Group Management tab.
Step 2. Find the group
Type any part of the group name into the search bar. The list filters to matching groups and subgroups as you type.
Step 3. Open it for editing
Click the edit icon in the group’s row. The Edit Group pop-up opens with the current configuration.
Step 4. Make the change
Update the Group Name, Parent Group, Select Users, or Select Roles as needed.
If you’re changing the parent, check what the new parent grants before you save. The whole branch inherits it, this group and everything under it.
Step 5. Update
Click Update to save.
Result
The group reflects the change, and everyone affected has their access adjusted without any per-user cleanup. Adding a member grants them the group’s roles; removing one takes back whatever no other source still provides.
Common issues
- I removed a user and they kept the access. They hold it directly, through another group, or through a parent above one of their groups. Removing them from one place doesn’t remove a union.
- I added a role and more people gained it than expected. Subgroups inherit it too, at every level below. Check the full branch.
- A user I want to add isn’t in the list. They’re in a different organization. Groups are organization-scoped.
- Search doesn’t find a group I know exists. Try a shorter fragment of the name. Search matches on the group name, not on members or roles.
- I changed the parent and members lost access. The old parent was granting something the new one doesn’t. Either add the missing role directly to this group, or move it back.
